The contemporary and evidence-based nature of the programme structure reflects current workforce development needs and training requirements within Mammography.

St George’s, University of London, in collaboration with the Rose Breast Education Centre, St George’s NHS Foundation Trust are delighted to provide the high quality support and training required to enable Radiographers to work within the NHS Breast Screening Programme as a Mammographer.

Course structure

The Professional Practice in Mammography PgCert comprises two mandatory core modules, undertaken concurrently, both must be passed successfully in order to be awarded the PgCert. No optional modules are required as all necessary content to confer the ability to work as a Mammographer within the NHS Breast Screening Programme will be included within the two core modules.

Initial online teaching is supported by clinical practice and mentorship primarily based at your place of employment, this is supported by the excellent clinical and academic teams at the Rose Centre and St George’s, University of London.

Assessment is completed through a combination of written work, clinical competency assessment and reflective practice. The PgCert is completed in one year.

Entry criteria

To be considered for this course, you will need to:

  • Meet the entry criteria
  • Write a personal statement
  • Provide two suitable references including confirmation of mentoring support

Applicants also need:

  • To be registered with the UK Health and Care Professions Council or relevant healthcare registrant body. Confirmed via HCPC registration uploaded onto application.
  • To have employment-based access to appropriate patient groups (breast screening patients or symptomatic patients). Confirmed via personal statement, employment history, or reference.

Undergraduate degree or equivalent

You should have or be expected to achieve, an honours degree in Diagnostic Radiography or Therapeutic Radiography, or equivalent degree title.

Personal statement and references

You will be asked to outline your reasons for applying for the course in a brief personal statement on the application form.

You will also need to provide two satisfactory references. One of these should be a recent academic reference and the other should be either a second academic reference or a professional/employer reference. For those unable to provide an academic referee a second professional/employer reference will be permitted.

This course is delivered by St George’s, University of London section of Diagnostic Radiography in collaboration with the Rose Breast Education Centre, St George’s NHS Foundation Trust. This means you benefit from the experience and facilities of multiple complementary institutions.

All advanced practice and PgCert modules are assessed through a combination of written assignments, procedure logbooks, reflective practice and clinical examinations.

Facilities and support

With St George’s, University of London you have access to excellent resources from a dedicated health care education institution. This is in conjunction with our multiple collaborative partner training sites at the Rose Breast Education Centre and the Jarvis Breast Screening Centre.

Our modern health sciences library offers a wide range of books, e-books, academic journals and other resources to support you. You will also have access to online resources, such as the CANVAS virtual learning environment and our Hunter discovery service to help you find the information you need. The library is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and comprises silent, quiet and group learning areas.

St George's, University of London has five computer suites, housing 260 workstations. Three of these suites are accessible 24 hours a day. Free Wi-Fi covers the whole campus. You can use these resources to access you course materials, alongside your access from home.

Careers

Successful completion of the Professional Practice in Mammography PgCert will confer the right to work within the NHS Breast Screening Programme as a Mammographer. Mammographers may choose to continue their development in the future with advanced practice and Consultant Mammography.

Tuition fees

2024 UK (Home)

  • Part-time PgCert (60 credits): Professional Practice in Mammography: £4,750
  • Standalone modules (30 credits): £1,950

Please note that applicants holding a Tier 2 visa, and with evidencable appropriate access to practice with patients of the NHS Breast Screening Programme, will be eligible for ‘Home’ fees (above) despite being assessed as an Overseas student for visa purposes.

Guidance for completing your references

When completing your application, you will be asked to provide contact details of two referees. Please ensure these details are accurate. As soon as you have submitted your application, your referees will be contacted by the university asking them to upload a reference to your online application.

One must be a recent professional/employer reference. The other should be either an academic reference or a second professional/employer reference. They should cover your suitability for the course and your academic ability.

Your referees should know you well enough, in an official capacity, to write about you and your suitability for higher education. We do not accept references from family, friends, partners, ex-partners or yourself.

We will send reminder emails to your referees but it is your responsibility to ensure that contact details are correct and referees are available to submit a reference. References should be uploaded within two weeks of making your application.
