St George’s is committed to providing the opportunity of higher education to all students who can benefit from it, regardless of circumstance and background. We also want to ensure that students from underrepresented groups are able to attend on-site events at St George’s in order to make informed choices about their future. We are proud to offer a travel bursary to support such students to attend key events at St George’s.
The travel bursary is available to cover reasonable costs on public transport or reimbursement of petrol costs. Please note, travel by taxis is not included in the travel bursary.

The travel bursary can be used to cover travel for:
- open days
- interviews
- applicant events
- offer holder events.
You are eligible to apply for the travel bursary if you meet 1 of the following criteria:
Please note: We are currently only able to offer the travel bursary to students considering study on undergraduate courses at St George’s.
Follow these steps to make your travel bursary claim:
- Book onto the St George’s event in question.
- Submit a travel bursary application via this application form.
- When you receive confirmation that your application has been approved, book your travel tickets/plan your journey.
- Complete the travel bursary claim form which will be emailed to you, and submit it to wp@sgul.ac.uk.
- Your travel claim will be processed after you have attended the event in question
- You should receive reimbursement into your bank account within 3 weeks.

Any type of public transport, standard class travel only.
If you’re travelling by car, petrol costs can also be reimbursed.
Please note, travel by taxis is not included in the travel bursary.
We can pay 40p per mile, calculated from your place of residence to St George’s and back using Google Maps.
You don’t need to provide petrol costs or receipts.
The maximum amount you can claim for is £200.
Electronic receipts/booking confirmation emails detailing your journey booking and payment confirmation.
The cost of your travel tickets and details of the journey must be clearly indicated.
Bank or credit card statements are not acceptable forms of proof.
We will aim to get back to you within 5 working days with the outcome of your application.
In the first instance only the attendee’s travel will be paid.
However, if you need care or assistance to get to or at the event, or in other exceptional circumstances, we may be able to cover the travel costs of an additional attendee.

In most instances, yes.
However, if it will be difficult for you to purchase tickets upfront please contact us at wp@sgul.ac.uk as we may be able to purchase them in advance for you.
Yes, your travel claim must be submitted within 3 months of purchase – as we will not usually process your claim until after the event, please ensure that you do not book your travel more than 3 months in advance of the event.
