Here at St George’s we are based in the thriving, multicultural hub of Tooting in south-west London. We have close ties with the local community and as an institution we play an active role in the vibrancy of the area.
Our south west London location in Tooting offers you the best of both worlds – it is small enough to maintain a friendly, local neighbourhood atmosphere, but it is close enough to all the attractions of central London. You will have all the advantages of living in one of the most exciting cities in the world without all the cost!
St George’s is five minutes from Tooting Broadway tube station, which is in London Transport's Zone 3. Central London and all its attractions are just 25 minutes away and accessible via the Northern Line tube service, which now runs 24/7 on weekends.
With a Student Oyster Card you get a 30% discount on tube and bus travel, and your Students’ Union card entitles you to discounts and concessions at a wide range of shops, clubs and cinemas. Plenty of museums and art galleries are free to enter, and there’s no charge for mooching through the streets and parks of this awe-inspiring city. Whatever your budget, you should be able to make London your own.
With a variety of pubs, clubs, parks and entertainment, as well as a plethora of amazing restaurants and eateries, there is plenty in Tooting to keep you occupied. The shopping areas in Clapham, Balham, Wimbledon and Colliers Wood are also close by.
Particular highlights include Tooting’s numerous, excellent curry houses, while our many pubs, including the Antelope and the Castle, provide great spaces to relax and take a break from studying.
Aside from food and drink, we’d recommend taking a walk to Tooting Common to experience Tooting Lido – a 300ft by 100ft outdoor swimming pool which is very popular in the summer months. It was also featured in the film Snatch starring Brad Pitt.
As well as all this, we have Tooting Market – a vibrant up and coming space with independent stores including a winery, a brewery, a gin bar and an Italian restaurant where your order is handmade and cooked in an open fire oven right in front of you. With a DJ playing chilled reggae until the early hours each Friday and Saturday night, it's the perfect spot to relax with friends. With cheap, fresh fruit and vegetables available daily, Tooting Market is sure to become a staple during your time at St George’s.
If that last point about fresh fruit and veg is more to your liking, you can further your healthy lifestyle by joining one of the local gyms in Tooting which are easily walkable from our campus. PureGym Wandsworth is open 24/7 with free exercise classes for members and membership from only £15.99 a month, as well as associated benefits for students. Tooting Leisure Centre is also close by and offers a gym, swimming pool and sports court hire – keeping fit at George’s couldn't be easier.
Of course, as we are part of the University of London, you are also free to use University of London Union (ULU) facilities and services, take part in ULU events and join its clubs and societies, most of which are based in and around the city centre.
