Molecular biology is the study of biology at a molecular level and is a very broad field. Members of the section reflect the diverse nature of molecular biology, having experience in genetics, clinical diagnostics, genomics, cell signalling, gene expression, genetic toxicology and multivariate statistical analysis.
Dr Andrew Walley is the head of the Section of Molecular Biology. The section provides substantial support to both undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses, and members are all active in research in their respective areas. Members of the section also carry out substantial roles in academic-related activities such as editing journals, peer review of papers and grants and public engagement and outreach activities.

Dr Andrew Walley – Head of Section and Senior Lecturer in Human Genomics
Research interests: the genetics of obesity and the genomics of other common genetic diseases.
Research interests: the genetics of idiopathic epilepsies and infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis.
Research interests: cell signalling and gene expression.
Research interests: various aspects of prostate cancer.
Teaching
The section provides broad support to many degree courses at all levels within the university. We are closely involved in teaching on the BSc Biomedical Science, MBBS5, MSc in Genomic Medicine, BSc Clinical Pharmacology and MSc Translational Medicine courses.
The members of the section carry out a range of important teaching roles, including Deputy Head of the Graduate School (KE), course director of the MSc in Genomic Medicine (CCB) and Chief Examiner of the BSc/iBSc/MSci in Biomedical Science (AW).
In addition, section members serve as external examiners and give external lectures to institutions such as Imperial College London.
Research
Section members are all active in research in their respective areas. Within the last five years, members of the section have published in Science, Nature Genetics, Nature Comms and Brain. They all have experience in supervising research degree students, as well as MSc and BSc project students.
Academic-Related Activities
Members of the section also carry out substantial roles in academic-related activities such as editing journals, peer review of papers and grants and serving on nationally-recognised committees.
