When you receive a new computer, there are a number of things you need to consider before you can get ‘up and running’.

If you obtain your computer through our new PC purchasing service, we will be able to pre-install all the relevant software and pre-configure it for St George’s network, as long as you provide all the relevant details on your request form. However you must still read all the information below as some of it will still apply.

Before your old PC is removed

You will need to transfer any files and documents locally stored on your old computer (ie on your C: drive) to the new computer, along with any local bookmarks, email address books or other miscellaneous files.

It is your responsibility to ensure that all files or documents stored locally on your PC are safely backed up.

The easiest way to do this is to copy them all to your home directory (H: drive). This way, when your new computer is connected to the network, you can simply copy them back from your home directory, and they will be protected by our back-up systems during the transition process.

A member of the helpdesk staff can help talk you through copying your files to your home directory if you are unsure of the process – please email us if you need help.

Getting your new computer networked

There must be an available network port in your office in order to connect your machine to the network. If you do not already have a network port you must submit a network port installation request form before you can request your machine be networked.

When purchasing your new PC through IT Services

You must provide the network port details on the new PC request form when you submit it, whether the new machine is replacing an existing one or is an additional PC.

When purchasing your new PC direct from the supplier

You must submit a network connection request form including the following information:

  • if the new machine is replacing one already on the network, you must provide the network details for the existing machine

  • if the machine is not replacing one already on the network, you must provide both the relevant network port details and the ‘adapter/physical address’ of your new machine.

Please contact IT/AV Support if you need any help retrieving network details from a machine.

Getting software installed on your new computer

Please note that for most commercial software (eg Microsoft products) you must purchase a licence for each machine that the software is installed on. Also, for any software not supplied directly by the helpdesk, we will need your original installation CDs to install to your new computer.

When purchasing your new PC through IT Services

There are sections on the new PC request form for you to specify:

  • which new (standard) software is to be installed

  • which software is to be transferred from your old to your new PC.

When purchasing your new PC direct from the supplier
  • If you are not transferring software from an existing machine, you must submit a separate software request form for each new software package you require.

  • If you are transferring software from an existing machine, you must provide the helpdesk with a complete list of all packages to be transferred along with the CDs for any non-St George’s standard software.

If you need any advice on requesting or transferring software, please email IT/AV Support first.
