The Centre for Allied Health is the home of the allied health programmes at St George's, University of London: BSc Diagnostic Therapy, BSc/MSc Occupational Therapy, BSc Paramedic Science, BSc/MSc Physiotherapy, BSc Radiotherapy and Oncology, MSc Advanced Clinical Practice and MSc Advanced Breast Practice.

The Centre encompasses the academic staff with primary responsibility for teaching across all the undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Members of the Centre also carry out internationally recognised research. Teaching at all levels is informed by the research experience and expertise of staff. The activity in the Centre is supported by a dedicated administration team of more than 20 staff embedded within the St George's, University of London Educational operational team.

Associate Professor Chris Baker is the Head of the Centre for Allied Health. Staff are located mainly in Hunter Wing, occupying offices and simulation facilities are situated in both Hunter and Jenner Wings.

Who we are

Over 80 members of staff are organised into five sections: Diagnostic TherapyOccupational Therapy, Paramedic SciencePhysiotherapy and Radiotherapy and Oncology. Each section is managed by a professional lead/Head of Section.

What we do

The Centre provides a structure to ensure all programmes are resourced to deliver high quality education and also to allow coordination of activities between programmes and sections in the Centre, and with the research institutes at St George's and with external partners. The Centre leadership team are responsible for the strategic development of Allied Health provision including engagement with our external partners, and line management of staff including staff development, personal review and workload planning.

We are unique in the UK because:

  • we are the only Centre for Allied Health in the UK 
  • we are part of the only university fully located on a hospital site
  • many of our staff are practising healthcare professionals.

We provide a breadth of training opportunities, including:

  • our students work in a wide range of settings, from GP surgeries to hospital wards, making them highly employable. 
  • sector leading simulations facilities.

We support our students by:

  • caring deeply about our professions and supporting one another.
  • providing outstanding pastoral care 
  • giving them training to provide peer to peer support, e.g. as Blue Light Champions 
  • forming excellent relationships between academic staff and students.

We have influential networks, such as:

  • practitioners bring insight into the future of healthcare back to us to provide skills needed by future healthcare students
  • being integrated with external research groups 
  • working with industry, providing knowledge exchange. 
  • collaborating with charity colleagues to raise the profile of our professions.
