To address digital inequality, we have made laptops and tablets available for loan. To apply for a device, an application form must be completed, and devices will be given to the following priority groups:

  • Students who are eligible to receive a grant from the St George’s Opportunity Fund
  • Students who are eligible to receive a grant from the Access to Learning Fund
  • Students who are registered disabled, care leavers and/or have caring responsibilities
  • International students who may have difficulty sourcing an appropriate device on arrival in the UK
  • Students from low income households. 

Students who meet the criteria above should complete one of the forms below.

If you do not fit into one of the above groups but think you might struggle to finance a device, please email IThardship@sgul.ac.uk to discuss the potential support options available. 

When you receive your device, you should login to the pre-installed office with your St George's login to activate your license and get access to Office365.

Laptop and tablet loan scheme rules

The device: 

  • is available for loan (free of charge) during the academic year 2023/24
  • can be borrowed from the Library Helpdesk, with a valid ID card
  • will be issued to your library account and is your responsibility.  Please email ITHardship@sgul.ac.uk immediately if it is lost, stolen or damaged. There may be a charge for lost or damages devices
  • is on loan to you for up to one academic year.  At the end of the academic year, you must either return it to the Library Helpdesk or complete a new application form
  • should be used in line with St George's IT and Data Protection policies and set up using your university credentials. 

Additional rules, include:

  • care must be taken to ensure personal data is protected and not shared with any third party
  • charging of the device should be undertaken with care using only the provided charger. 

Legal terms and conditions

  1. The Device cannot be sold or give away by you; it is the property of St George’s.  
  2. Any data communication arising out of the use of the device is for you to pay.  
  3. The Device provided by us to you under this scheme at your request are solely for the purpose of loaning them to you.  St George’s does not supply or loan the Devices with any representation concerning the condition performance or qualities of the Devices or with or subject to any term, condition or warranty express or to be implied and all such representations conditions warranties whether relating to the capacity, age quality, description, condition, leasing possession, transportation or use of the Device or to the suitability or fitness of the Device for a particular or any purpose are excluded. 
  4. St George’s does not warrant that the Device does not or that your use of the Device will not infringe any patents trade-marks and registered designs copyrights or confidential information or Intellectual Property Rights owned or possessed by any third party and St George’s shall not be liable to you for any loss suffered by you in any way by reason of any such infringement 
  5. St George’s indemnifies you for direct damage to tangible property caused by the negligence of St George’s staff in connection with the performance of their duties under the laptop or tablet loan scheme, or by defects in the Device supplied to you. St George’s total liability under this scheme is limited to 1% of the declared value subject to a maximum payment of £500,000.00 for any one loss provided that any loss of information occurring during transit or loading or unloading in connection therewith or where the Device is outside the British Isles then the maximum indemnity is £50,000.00 in respect of any one loss, or if the Device has been or is modified to make it compatible with other equipment in which case the maximum indemnity is £50,000.00.  
  6. Except in respect of death or personal injury resulting from St George’s negligence in no event will St George’s be liable for any damages resulting from a loss of data or use, lost profits, loss of anticipated savings, nor any damages that are an indirect or secondary consequence of any act or omission of St George’s whether such damages were reasonably foreseeable or actually foreseen, or if St George’s has been advised of the possibility that such damages may occur.  
  7. Except as provided above in the case of personal injury, death and damage to tangible property, St George’s maximum liability to you under the laptop loan scheme or otherwise for any cause whatsoever (whether in the form of additional cost of remedial services or otherwise) shall be for direct costs and damages only and will be limited to the sum for which St George’s carries professional negligence cover regardless of whether such insurance covers the claim giving rise to the liability. 
  8. You acknowledge that the limitations contained in these rules are reasonable in light of all circumstances.  
  9. Your statutory rights as a consumer are unaffected.  
  10. Any liability that is not expressly assumed in these laptop loan rules are hereby excluded. For the purposes of these rules St George’s includes its employees, sub-contractors and suppliers who shall all have the befit of the limits and exclusions of liability set out in terms of the Contracts (Rights of Third Parties) Act 1999.
