Advancing medicine through research, collaboration and training, the Institute for Infection and Immunity at St George's aims to have a significant impact on human health. By developing a better understanding of pathogen biology and human immune responses, we work to enhance diagnosis, prevention and treatment of infectious disease and conditions linked to immune system function.

Our vision is to be a leading infection and immunity institute, driving improvements in health through collaborative basic and clinical research and training.

From Jenner to genomics

The Institute for Infection and Immunity is building on an outstanding track record of research and innovation in infectious disease. Its most illustrious alumnus is Edward Jenner, who trained at St George’s under the direction of the eminent surgeon John Hunter. Jenner’s inoculation in 1796 of eight-year-old James Phipps with fluid from cowpox blisters, to provide protection against smallpox, launched a new era of vaccination and control of infectious disease. Infection and immunity have remained strengths of St George’s and important themes for the university ever since. From pioneering genomic studies of bacterial pathogens, to innovative developments of plant-derived biopharmaceuticals, the institute remains at the forefront of global efforts to diagnose, prevent and treat infectious disease.
