Dr Teck Khong

Senior Lecturer in Clinical Pharmacology
Dr Teck Khong is an academic Clinical Pharmacologist with roles in teaching, research and the NHS

Dr Teck Khong is a Consultant and Senior Lecturer in Clinical Pharmacology and Cardiovascular Medicine. He has extensive experience of drug development at all stages of research and of clinical use of medicines at an individual prescribing and at regional policy level; and, has experience in evaluating the use and implementation of new medicines and technologies.

He responsible for the teaching of clinical pharmacology, prescribing and clinical skills to both undergraduate medical and pharmacy students. He has been the Clinical Director of the MPharm Course and has led various innovative developments including for instance the implementation of the award-winning “Red Flags Clinical history-taking” module as well as introducing basic-life support teaching, clinical simulation & prescription workshops, ward-round simulations, drug appraisal and serious incident committee simulations, in continually evolving the course to help students develop their clinical skills for emerging career opportunities in tomorrow’s healthcare economy.

Clinically, Dr Khong works as an internal physician, is one of a few European Society of Hypertension-accredited Hypertension Specialist and co-leads the in-patient Cardiovascular Medicine team and Blood Pressure Unit. He sees see over 1200 hypertension-related consultations a year, including routine out-patient as well as urgent and emergency in-patient cases; and, maintains an active research program in the field of hypertension.

He is responsible for the local St George’s Hospital Guidelines for the Management of Medical Emergencies and is the editor for the related Grey Book

Dr Khong graduated in Medicine from the University of Dundee, Scotland.

He undertook his junior house-officer rotation on the professorial firm on the Clinical Pharmacology Unit at Ninewells Hospital and during this period was awarded the GlaxoSmithKline House-officer Prize. He went on to complete his postgraduate medical training on the prestigious University of Dundee Ninewells Senior House-officer Medical rotation and became a Member of Royal College of Physicians.

Thereafter, he completed his British Heart Foundation-funded Clinical Research Fellowship and MD thesis in the Blood Pressure Unit at St George’s Hospital Medical School, London and thereafter his training in Clinical Pharmacology and in Internal Medicine at St George’s Hospital.

Dr Khong was appointed as Senior Lecturer and Consultant Physician at St George’s University of London and St George’s Hospital in 2006. He continues to have roles in education, research and in the NHS.

Dr Khong has undertaken his research in the field of hypertension and cardiovascular disease. He has extensive research experience and published widely in clinical hypertension - including being awarded the British Society of Hypertension Junior Investigator Prize, co-authoring the BMA Prize-winning textbook, “Drugs in Cardiology” and contributing to numerous national and international randomised clinical trials in hypertension.
