Dr Godfrina McKoy

Lecturer in Problem Based Learning

Problem Based Learning (PBL) is a key learning method in MBBS4 year 1 and T year. My role as lecturer in PBL includes facilitating PBL tutorials as well as liaising with module leads and the curriculum development team to keep our PBL cases current. This is important not only for maximising our students’ PBL experience, but also for ensuring that our cases reflect the dynamic nature of our MBBS curriculum which is constantly responding to, changes in GMC guidance, advances in related scientific & medical fields, changes in healthcare delivery, as well as changes in educational theories and practices.  I also recently took on the role of MBBS4 year 1 Life Maintenance module lead.

I am an Advance HE Fellow having completed the accredited Postgraduate Certificate in Healthcare & Biomedical Education course here at SGUL. I am particularly keen on the adoption of educational practices that maximise student engagement such as Team–Based Learning.

Both my undergraduate and postgraduate studies were at King’s College University of London. I have a BSc in Pharmacology and a PhD in Biology. I also have over 15 years hands-on research experience in the growth and regeneration of skeletal & cardiac muscle, and to keep abreast with ongoing research in this area I supervise 'dry' SSC projects such as cardiac stem cell therapy. The lectures I deliver such as the Hypertension (MPharm year 3, Kingston), Pharmacology of the CVS: Angina (Biomedical Science year 1) DNA replication and the Cell Cycle (MBBS4 year 1) also reflect my subject expertise in these areas.
