St George’s, University of London has been successful in its bid for a share of £432 million, awarded by the Office for Students (OfS) specifically to boost teaching facilities and equipment in higher education institutions.

St George’s was one of only 47 UK Universities and colleges to be awarded the maximum amount of £5.8 million per provider.

The funding will be used to deliver an Education Transformation Project that will enhance our hands-on skills facilities, create new student study spaces and equip the campus for efficient digital learning and study.

The Project will progress across a three-year period and include:

Skills and simulation facilities

  1. A sector leading anatomy suite We will build on the current refurbishment work to equip multi-modal workstations in our anatomy teaching space. These will include downflow tables (for cadaveric study) and Anatomage tables. Anatomage are interactive digital tables which allow for the exploration and learning of human anatomy in 3D.

  1. Inspiring hands-on teaching and learning spaces We will refurbish two, 10-bed simulated hospital settings, four Physiotherapy teaching laboratories, two flexible clinical skills teaching rooms and an expanded Clinical Skills practice room. We will enhance our Paramedic simulation suite, creating an ‘immersion room’ to run Road Traffic Collision and major incident training, and increase the capacity of the radiography Treatment Planning System (TPS).

Digital campus

  1. Reliable WiFi throughout St George’s We know that there are areas of campus where the WiFi doesn’t work as well as it could. We will upgrade our WiFi infrastructure and expand access points, so that more students will be able to access more content at the same time without problems.
  2. Transform our teaching rooms We will install 234 additional charging points for students’ digital devices, refurbish 40 teaching rooms and a lecture theatre, replace or upgrade technical kit in 80 teaching rooms and install LED screens in two of our large lecture theatres.
  3. Create six digital media production hubs where staff can develop high-quality pre-recorded teaching and assessment content such as bite-sized recordings with interactive quizzes.
  4. Introduce a Team Based Learning tool The new tool will support collaboration for all learners to work flexibly together in various learning settings, including large on-campus settings.
  5. Acquire a new digital platform for flexible part-time study. We will accommodate flexible part-time learners with the introduction of 'Canvas Catalog', enabling learners to undertake short courses and engage with their learning content and peers.

Student study spaces

  1. Two new group discussion rooms in the library and dedicated flexible learning space for collaborative or individual study.

  1. A new flexible teaching room We will create a new flexible teaching space for teaching and learning during core hours and to provide additional study space out of hours, seven days a week.

We are really excited about this new funding, which will allow us to significantly enhance teaching, learning and the campus experience for our students and staff.
