St George's, University of London is pleased to announce that Julie Leeming, Director of Planning, has been awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) in the 2023 New Year's honours list. The BEM is an award that recognizes exemplary service and is given to people who have made a significant contribution to their community or field of work.
Dr. Leeming has been recognized for her excellent work and leadership in the field of Higher Education. She has been pivotal in making long-term plans at St George's and has worked tirelessly to ensure the University's strategic priorities are aligned with its values, the needs of its staff and students, and Government policies.
BEM recipients will be presented with their medal by their Lord-Lieutenant at a local ceremony and are invited to attend a Royal Garden Party. "I am very grateful and honored to receive this prestigious award," said Dr. Leeming.
"As Director of Planning at St George's University of London—The UK's specialist health university—it has been a privilege to serve the university, contributing to its growth and success over the years.
“This award belongs to colleagues beyond myself and will serve as a reminder of the hard work and dedication that goes into building a great institution like St George's. I would like to thank all of the colleagues and community members who have supported me and inspired me to strive for excellence in all I do."

About Julie Leeming
Julie joined St George’s planning team in September 2012 and was appointed to the role of Director of Planning in September 2016. In this role, she provides advice to the University leadership on policy initiatives, rankings and performance.
Julie Leeming's responsibilities as Director of Planning at St George's University of London include horizon scanning, impact assessment, planning coordination, scenario planning, grant letter analysis, key performance indicator monitoring, and co-chairing the business continuity planning silver team.
In addition to these responsibilities, Julie serves as co-chair of the London Higher Planners' Group, sits on the Executive group of the Higher Education Strategic Planners' Association, and is active in the Higher Education Data Insight Group, and Complete University Guide Advisory Group.
Prior to St George’s, Julie was Deputy Head of Planning at Queen Mary, University of London and has also worked in planning at the University of Greenwich and a London public health authority. She holds a PhD in Mathematics which she undertook at Queen Mary and volunteers as a treasurer for a charity.
