This week marks Healthcare Science Week, and to provide a glimpse into the programme and field of study, we've invited one of our second year Healthcare Science (Physiological Sciences) BSc students to share their experiences and insights with us.

About the course

I am in the second year of Clinical Physiology (Healthcare Science) and am learning and experiencing so much, whether that be on placement, small group work, case based discussions (CBDS) lectures or just self-directed learning.

The course modules allow for you to get an in depth and holistic view of pathophysiology of diseases, public health, ethics, medical devices and physics and also so much extensive knowledge in your chosen speciality (whether that be cardiac or respiratory physiology).

In year 1 a lot of lectures are combined with allied health courses or Medicine (MBBS), allowing for us to gain understanding in all areas of healthcare and apply them to our future placements.

Placements

In 1st year you get put on three rotations at different placement sites, which will help you decide your speciality for year 2 and 3. During first year I had placement at UCLH, Royal Brompton and Imperial Hammersmith Hospital.

Placement is where most of my interpersonal skills, confidence and overall knowledge has developed and I’ve found it’s the perfect way to gain experience with uncomfortable or unusual situations.

For example, dealing with emotional patients, or patients who are anxious to have diagnostic tests performed as the results could be the determining factor in them receiving life changing surgery. A lot of cased based discussions and reflective practice allows for me to research into diseases that are rare and find patients whose stories really stick, especially younger patients whose illnesses simply seem unfair and cruel.

Placement can be emotional and sometimes overwhelming, but I am grateful for all that I have learnt from my peers and graduates on placement. Furthermore, I know I am always supported by personal tutors or course leads, which is something SGUL really prioritises.

Why I chose to study Healthcare Science (Physiological Sciences) BSc

I chose to study Healthcare Science because I wanted to be able to help people. Diagnostics is such a crucial part in implementing treatment plans and tracking disease. I feel as if I’m making a change to each patient I see, which is such a rewarding and gratifying feeling.
