St George’s Frontiers in Human Health Summer School is currently accepting applications for July 2023. The programme explores past, present and future approaches to tackling some of the world’s major health challenges. Fields covered include global health, infection and immunity, genomic medicine, cancer, translational medicine and population health.

Emily Gannon completed the Frontiers in Human Health Summer School in 2022 and shares her reflections on what it entailed and how it has benefited her subsequently.

“I applied to St George’s Frontiers in Human Health Summer School after seeing a Facebook post about it. My expectations for it were very high."

Prior to applying, I had religiously watched the TV show ‘24 Hours in A&E’ filmed in St George’s Hospital, so I was really excited to attend lectures and the various laboratories here.

"Even though my expectations were high, the summer school exceeded them! I learned so much from experts in their respective fields and gained invaluable laboratory experience."

“The first two weeks comprised of lectures delivered by these experts which covered ongoing health problems in different areas."

We talked to two medical students about how to carry out an ear examination using an otoscope and took an exam on it. We also had a clinical afternoon – this was the highlight of the summer school for me!

“The last two weeks comprised of laboratory research and finished with a group oral presentation. Almost every day there were social activities organised. I participated in a few and also did my own sight-seeing in London! I made so many new friends who I still keep in contact with. I also survived studying in London during a 40-degree Celsius heatwave!

“When the four weeks came to an end, I was so sad as I’d had such a wonderful time at St George’s! I learned so much gaining experience both academically and personally."

The Frontiers in Human Health Summer School is a programme I would definitely recommend, the staff at St George’s were so professional and friendly. I am delighted to have learnt so much and to have made so many new friends from all over the world.

“The summer school programme gave me experience learning about medical topics which I find very interesting. After completing the programme, I knew for sure that I wanted to work in a healthcare environment."

I have learned so much and gained wonderful laboratory experience. I also had the opportunity to use the summer school credits towards my degree grade, which was amazing.

“I thoroughly enjoyed my time living in Tooting and living in Horton Halls. I plan to apply to St George’s for postgraduate study in the future."

There is not a day that goes by that I do not reflect on completing the summer school last summer.
