Dear All,

As you will all be aware, Covid-19 has led to the University suffering substantial financial loses. As a result, we have taken the regrettable decision not to hold a merit award round this year, as one way to reduce costs. In addition, we will not be holding a meeting of the Professorial Salary Review Committee. However, we do intend to continue to offer “Thank You” awards in the summer and will be asking for nominations in due course. We are, of course, aware that the current circumstances are unique but will be requesting that nominations consider events over the whole academic year and not just the past few months.

With regard to pay more generally, usually around this time of year we would provide you with an update on the national pay negotiations which take place between the University Council for Educational Administration (UCEA), who negotiate on behalf of the university employers (including St George’s), and the joint trade unions recognised by the higher education sector. However, UCEA and the joint trade unions have decided to temporarily delay this year’s negotiating round due to Covid-19, as the current restrictions are preventing the parties from holding full negotiating meetings. In reaching this decision, both parties understand that this is a unique situation which shall not set a precedent for future negotiating rounds. We will provide you with more information once it becomes available.

Best wishes

Jenny Winters
