Academic Hub launched for Therapeutic Radiographers
Published: 18 December 2020
The Therapeutic Radiography section of the Centre for Allied Health is very proud to be virtually launching our Academic Hub with Varian Medical Systems. A cloud-based resource, Therapeutic Radiography students can now access the highly specialised radiotherapy software available in our dedicated treatment planning suite off campus.
The Academic Hub technology enhances the learning experience of students, making materials easily accessible for those managing assessments, competencies, and clinical placement, as well as non-academic commitments. It helps make learning even more student-focused and helps better prepare graduates for employment.
St George's is the only Higher Education Institution in London with this resource, offering our students a unique opportunity and environment to learn and grow.
Therapeutic Radiography course lead, Julie Hendry, commented, "We are really pleased to have this amazing resource for St George's therapeutic radiography students. The team have been working incredibly hard with Varian and other partner HEIs to develop materials and opportunities to enhance students' professional knowledge. Yasmeen Malik, Treatment Planning Lead within the Section, has developed a series of innovative and informative learning resources to enhance the student experience. The future is exciting, and the Academic Hub provides a wealth of opportunities to collaborate, research and innovate, for both students and staff."
Second year Therapeutic Radiography student, Nia Roderick, said, “I’ve really enjoyed using the TPS software from home and feel I can develop my skills at my own pace and continue this development at any time. At the beginning, I was slightly suspicious of the limited log in usernames, but it actually works completely fine and I have never had any issues logging on. The booklets are extremely clear and sufficient for the work that needs to be done. I can see a lot of time has been spent on these and I’m really grateful. Additionally, the system works perfectly fine (a little slow but this is to be expected) on my laptop and I feel I am still able to complete all the necessary tasks to become competent in basic treatment planning."
Fellow second year student, Corneliu Cazacu, added, “Honestly the cloud based TPS is a really good opportunity to be able to work on the workbooks from home as well as just practising to get better. It's also quite easy to get used to it. I am generally the type of person to work on it outside the working hours (9-5) which means is always available and I have no problems logging in.”
