St George’s, University of London, as well as early years and senior academics, is proud to host the 2024 Society for Academic and Primary Care (SAPC) annual meeting of academic departments of general practice and primary care from London and the South East at Madingley Hall, Cambridge.

This year’s conference is entitled Challenging Inequality and Promoting Inclusiveness.

We look forward to a lively and informative meeting for students, as well as early and senior academics.

As well as the academic programme, dinner and quiz we will be timetabling the popular George's power walk on Friday (26 January 2024) morning and offering a Tai Chi workshop to wind down on Thursday (25 January 2024) evening.

Keynote speakers

Dr Sally Hull

Dr Sally Hull joined a GP partnership in Tower Hamlets in 1981, retiring from clinical practice in 2016. She was a lead clinician for the Clinical Effectiveness Group (CEG), based at Queen Mary, University of London, which has supported primary-care development in east London for over 20 years, using audit, locally tailored guidance and practice-based education.

Her research interests at CEG include improving the delivery of long-term care, and health inequalities. In collaboration with Barts Health she led on building and evaluating the  UK’s first (pre-Covid) virtual kidney service with shared access to the GP record.

Dr Margaret Ikpoh

Dr Margaret Ikpoh is a GP Partner at Holderness Health, a practice for 36,000 patients in East Yorkshire and has worked there for 12 years. She is the current RCGP Vice Chair for Professional Development & Standards. She is the practice lead for research and has had previous roles with the NIHR Yorkshire and Humber as a research champion for First5 GPs and AITs. She is also the former Associate Director for Primary Care for Hull York Medical School and is a GP Trainer. 

At the RCGP, she has been involved in the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Task groups and was awarded Fellow of The Year at the 2021 RCGP Inspire Awards ceremony.

She has recently been celebrated at a Women of the Year Event and been honoured as one of the top 50 most influential BAME professionals by HSJ in October 2022.

Dr Ban Haider

Dr Haider qualified from Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ Medical School in 2005 and completed her postgraduate training in South London. During this time, she developed a keen interest in inclusive clinical practice and found this to be a natural translation to her academic work. Throughout the Covid19 pandemic, she became involved in public engagement initiatives to promote vaccination uptake in marginalised communities, and this spurred her further to undertake work to address healthcare inequalities within medical curriculum and commit to upskilling future generations of healthcare professionals to recognise healthcare inequalities and play their part in addressing them.

Dr Haider has worked on a wide range of local and national projects to promote inclusive education and tackle discrimination within higher education settings. She has contributed to the development of national guidance on Challenging Exclusions within medical schools, as part of her role on the Medical Schools Council EDI Alliance. She has also worked with the UK charity Against Violence and Abuse to develop resources for universities to tackle sexual misconduct as part of their #Combatmisconduct project.

In her current role at St George’s, Dr Haider has worked cross-institutionally on the development of an Inclusive education Framework to support courses to provide an equitable learning experience for all students. She co-chairs the Race Equality Action and Engagement Group and has delivered and co-ordinated training workshops across the institute on Allyship and Advocacy in clinical and healthcare science settings. She has recently been awarded the Vice-Chancellor’s Prize for Educational Excellence in recognition of sustained contribution to addressing discrimination and inequalities in education.

Abstracts

The annual SAPC South East regional conference invited abstract submissions for the 2024 conference. We particularly welcomed submissions that mapped closely to this years theme. However, submissions were welcome on any topic relating to research and educational activities in primary care both in the UK and internationally.

Oral presentations Oral presentations will be a 10 minute presentation plus 5 minutes discussion and will be organised by topic into parallel sessions. Oral presentation submitted and accepted for 2024 conference, detailing all authors and co-authors can be viewed on the Oral Presentation page. See the Oral Presentations page.
Interactive workshops Workshops offer a 90 minute slot to bring people together with shared interests to explore a topic in greater depth. Workshops may have an educational, research or practice-based theme. Details of the workshops that will be available to attend at the 2024 conference can be found in the 2024 programme. Creative enquiries Creative enquiry submissions using any creative medium for the presentation, for example: music, dance, monologue, painting, photography, prose, poetry, sculpture, accompanied by a written reflection. We have several prizes on offer at this years conference, including:

  • SAPC prizes for two highest scoring abstracts (voucher towards SAPC ASM conference attendance).

The two highest scoring abstracts will be invited to do longer presentations on the Friday morning and share the SAPC prize (attendance at ASM July 2024)

*Early career is defined as being in the first 5 years of an academic (research/education) career
