Primary Care and Medical Education: Perfect Partners
The clinical stories and experiences presented by registered patients and populations provide academic primary care clinicians with fascinating material for teaching clinical and population medicine to students and stimulating research.
Primary care practice encompasses care for all bodily systems, from cradle to grave, and includes health promotion, undifferentiated presentations - from acute and chronic care, to palliative care.
In her Inaugural Lecture, Professor Ibison will describe how the experiences of patients and populations she has worked with through 35 years of clinical practice have informed medical education innovations (and a little research) throughout her academic career. She will also discuss the clinicians, colleagues, trainees and students who have inspired her.

About Professor Judith Ibison
Professor Ibison was part of the historically privileged generation. Excellent state education and full living and fee grants for Higher Education, at a time of increasing access to University for women, enabled her access to a medical degree.
Being taught by inspirational clinical and academic role models in general practice in Tower Hamlets, she joined the stimulating and supportive GP professional 'tribe', mixing academic roles with her clinical role in deprived areas of London.
Initially spending time in public health medicine and epidemiology after completing a Masters in epidemiology and concurrently working as a GP, she then combined interests by joining St George's as a Lecturer in primary care in 2000.
Since then, she has been involved in medical education and some research from diverse perspectives, before happily returning to a focus on primary care in 2022. In her free time, Professor Ibison relaxes by spending time with family and friends as well as swimming, reading, and hiking.

St George's newly arrived or promoted professors are invited to give an Inaugural Lecture to mark this milestone in their academic careers.
Professors use the opportunity to introduce themselves, update colleagues on current and future research plans and share their research with wider audiences. It is also a chance to celebrate the support from friends and family, and from colleagues, mentors and collaborators past and present.
