British National Formulary (BNF) and British National Forumlary for Children (BNFC)

The recommended national formulary used in the NHS. See below for a variety of access points.

  • BNFBNFC : free access provided by NICE.

  • BNF & BNFC: provided by Medicines Complete. Requires an NHS OpenAthens account- select ‘Login’ then ‘Login via OpenAthens’.

  • BNF & BNFC App: eligible UK users can download the app version of BNF and BNFC for free. Android and iOS versions available.

Drugs and Therapeutics Bulletin

Drug and Therapeutics Bulletin (DTB) publishes practical, independent, evidence-based information for practising healthcare professionals. Select ‘Login via OpenAthens’ to access with your Athens credentials.

EMC – The Electronic Medicine Compendium

The EMC covers over 14,000 drugs approved in the UK. 

Medline plus

Hosted by the producers of PubMed in the USA, Medline Plus is a patient-friendly resource which covers medicines information.

Specialist Pharmacy Service

The NHS Specialist Pharmacy Service offers free information and advice to pharmacists, GPS and other healthcare professionals in order to support the optimal use of medicines in the UK.
