The Finance department arranges cover for St George’s buildings, contents, motor vehicles, travel, employers and public liability insurance. As well as providing advice and support on insurance matters, we are also responsible for management and handling of claims made under our policies with the assistance of the Director of Legal Services.

All insurance matters for both staff and students are dealt with by Susan McPheat, Director of Finance, who also maintains a register of all insurance policies held by the university.

St George’s insurance cover

Here is a summary of insurances held by St George’s, University of London between 01/08/2023 and 31/07/2024:

The institutes and professional/corporate services have a duty to inform Susan McPheat, Director of Finance, of any significant alterations that may affect St George’s insurance cover.

Staff and students will be updated of any changes made to the policies which might impact on them.

Business travel insurance

St George’s provides travel insurance cover for staff and students of the university while travelling on university business, both abroad and within the UK. The policy provides cover for death, injury, medical expenses, cancellation or curtailment expenses, loss/damage to any personal property, loss of money, travel delay and loss of deposits, as defined in the policy.

Travel to unstable countries

Travel to areas of known instability is highly discouraged by the university. Prior to booking travel, we recommend that you follow the foreign travel advice provided by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. In light of fast-changing and destabilising events in parts of the world which might affect insurance cover, please contact Susan McPheat, Director of Finance, should you have any questions. This will enable us to ensure that adequate insurance cover is either in place, or is clarified with insurers where travel is planned to a country with greater-than-average risk.

European Union

When travelling to European Union countries it is recommended that you carry a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or a UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) which allows you to have reduced cost medical treatment in an emergency.

Ensuring you are covered

When you travel abroad on university business, St George’s has a corporate responsibility to maintain a record of the precise dates and location of travel. Please ensure you record all business travel on MyWorkplace under ‘other absence’. If you don’t inform us of your travel details, you may not be fully covered for your business trip.

Extending your trip

In the event that you decide to extend your business trip for non-business travel, the same level of cover will apply, provided the leisure aspect is no more than the duration of the business trip and is within the same country. When requesting to use this benefit, please endure this is documented on the travel certificate (Excel) prior to your travel.

Travel certificate

All staff and students of the university travelling on university business must complete the travel certificate (Excel) for each travel occasion and email the completed form prior to the start date of the journey. Staff are required to complete the travel certificate in addition to the entry on MyWorkplace.

Insurance claims

The institutes or professional/corporate services should advise Susan McPheat, Director of Finance, of any incident relating to a potential claim as soon as they become aware of it. The insurance claims team will be notified on the same working day. Depending on the severity of the situation, loss adjusters may be required to arrange a site visit

The timescale for settling any claim will vary depending upon the complexity of the incident. The insurance company have their own service standards and their performance is monitored by St George’s. The institutes or professional/corporate services must keep Susan McPheat, Director of Finance, informed of all events relating to claims.
