Dr Síle Molloy in the Institute for Infection and Immunity has been selected as one of 32 ‘emerging leaders’ to become a member of the UK Young Academy.
"I am a PhD student working in the Institute for Infection and Immunity. My research interest covers a few research areas such as physiology, microbiology and bioinformatics. I am primarily interested in the physiology of lungs in people with diabetes. I investigate the potential changes in bacterial composition of lungs in diabetes and whether it has a detrimental effect on the health of the lungs. I am also interested in the effects that other chronic lung conditions (such as cystic fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder and asthma) have on the lung microbiota; with or without diabetes. Primarily my research is done in the various mice models of diabetes. However, we are currently working on transitioning into the clinical field. We are utilising next-generation sequencing performed here at the Institute of Infection and Immunity at St George’s in order to assess the changes in the lung microbiota. We hope that this information will allow us to advance the treatments for the chronic lung conditions in diabetic patients."
