Head of the section, Professor Sanjay Sharma.

At City St George’s, University of London, the Section of Clinical Cardiology is at the forefront of cardiovascular research, innovation, and education. Based within one of the UK’s leading medical and research institutions, we are dedicated to improving heart disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment through cutting-edge research and clinical excellence.
Our Section is home to a multidisciplinary team of cardiologists, researchers, and healthcare professionals pioneering new cardiovascular medicine approaches. We focus on a range of key areas, including arrhythmias, heart failure, coronary and valvular heart disease, inherited cardiac conditions and sports cardiology. We strive to bring the latest scientific advancements into everyday clinical practice through clinical trials, translational research, and collaboration with global partners.

The inherited cardiac diseases service stands amongst the largest in the UK, actively generating research that informs diagnostic algorithms and national guidelines. In collaboration with the cardiac pathology unit, the department has examined the pathological basis and management of entities such as the Brugada syndrome and idiopathic left ventricular hypertrophy. The sports cardiology unit provides specialised care for elite athletes across several organisations including the Football Association, English Cricket, Premier Rugby Union and League, the Lawn Tennis Association, British Rowing and the English Institute of Sport. Over 10 years, the unit has been pivotal in formulating global recommendations for interpreting cardiac investigations in athletes, proposing algorithms for differentiating physiological adaptation from cardiac pathology as well as influencing international exercise guidelines for athletic individuals with cardiac disease.

We are committed to educating the next generation of cardiologists and medical professionals. Our Section offers specialist postgraduate courses, research opportunities, and hands-on clinical training, providing students with access to world-leading expertise and state-of-the-art facilities.

The Section works closely with St George’s Hospital, one of the UK’s busiest cardiac centres, ensuring that our research directly impacts patient care. By collaborating with NHS trusts, pharmaceutical companies, and international research bodies, we help shape the future of cardiovascular health.

Whether you are a student, researcher, or clinician, Clinical Cardiology at City St George’s welcomes those who share our passion for advancing heart health. Explore our research, discover our training programs, or collaborate with our experts to make a difference in cardiovascular medicine.
