St George’s, University of London is committed to providing an academic and work environment of the highest quality for students and staff. We value and celebrate our diversity and strive to create a positive working and learning environment that is free from harassment and bullying, where all people are treated with dignity and respect.

We aim to enable all staff and students to fulfil their personal potential and do not tolerate bullying and harassment of any kind. Our Dignity at Work policy outlines the behaviours and principles we expect our staff to adhere to.

Our Dignity at Study policy outlines the behaviours and principles we expect our students to adhere to.

What is harassment?

Harassment, as defined in the Equality Act 2010, is any unwanted conduct which has the purpose or effect of violating an individual’s dignity or creating an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive environment for that individual. Anything that is unwelcome to you is unwanted. You don’t need to have previously objected to it for this to constitute as harassment.

What is bullying?

Bullying may be characterised as offensive, intimidating, malicious or insulting behaviour; an abuse or misuse of power through means that undermine, humiliate, denigrate or injure the recipient.

What should I do if I am being bullied or harassed?

If the behaviour persists, or you do not feel able to speak to the person involved, please bring it to the attention of a personal tutor, member of staff or HR. All allegations of bullying and harassment will be promptly and thoroughly investigated. Our grievance procedure (PDF) outlines how issues can be raised formally.
