Clearing is the process through which applicants without any university offers can gain a place on an undergraduate or pre-registration MSc course which has a vacancy.
To enter Clearing, you need to have received all your qualification results and have a 2023 UCAS application. Find out more on the UCAS website.
To apply to St George’s you will need to complete our online application form.
In order to apply you need to have a valid UCAS Apply account (for 2023 entry) and:
-
not be holding any offers.
For example, because you:
- haven’t yet applied to any university for 2023 entry
- didn’t receive any offers in the main UCAS cycle
- received offers but have declined them
- received offers and selected a firm and insurance choice but have not met the conditions of those offers.
-
not be awaiting any qualification results which are required as part of the entry criteria.
For example:
- if you are taking a GCSE qualification this year, you will not be able to enter Clearing until Thursday 24 August when you receive those results.
In addition, to be eligible to apply to St George's via Clearing you:
-
must not have received an unsuccessful decision following interview for the same course this academic year i.e. if you applied for a course at St George's in the main UCAS cycle, were interviewed but did not receive an offer to study with us following the interview, you are not eligible to apply for that same course again in Clearing, even if you have achieved higher grades than you expected to
-
must not have studied at a university before and not completed the degree due to academic failure. This includes studying at St George's previously and not completing due to academic failure, and covers all degree subject areas, not just the one you wish to apply for now via Clearing.
Unfortunately, if you do meet any of the criteria listed above, you are not eligible to apply to St George's via Clearing and your application will be automatically rejected before it can pass to a member of the team to be considered.
You will need the following information to hand when you are making your application to St George's online:
- UCAS Personal ID number
- your Level 2 qualifications and grades (GCSEs, etc)
- your Level 3 qualifications and grades (A Levels, International Baccalaureate, etc), or degree results if you are applying as a graduate
- UCAT score and candidate number (for Medicine applications, if places are available)
- the name of the course you wish to apply for.
You can view all our undergraduate courses here.
If you are attending one of our Clearing events between 19 and 25 August, then we look forward to seeing you at the event you have registered for.
Our Clearing Team will not be available if you visit our campus, should you wish to discuss your application or if you have any questions (unless you are registered to attend one of the Clearing events). We recommend you contact our Clearing Team via phone or email if you wish to speak with the Clearing Team.
No. If you previously registered your interest via our website, this means you signed up to received email updates about St George's and Clearing, but you will not have applied via Clearing, nor will you be added to a waiting list. You can complete our online Clearing application, if you have your results.
If your Clearing application is still under consideration and you missed a call from team, you can contact our Clearing Team directly by emailing clearing@sgul.ac.uk.
If you are an existing applicant or offer holder, you are invited to contact our Admissions Team. If you are a prospective student with a general enquiry, you can contact our Course Enquiries Team.
All St George's contact information can be found here.
For some of our courses, we may accept slightly lower grades during Clearing than we do in the main application cycle.
If you are interested in a course and you have achieved grades that fall just below our published criteria, you are encouraged to submit an online Clearing application. Please note we cannot advise you before applying of your likely eligibility for a Clearing vacancy.
If we are not able to consider you for your preferred course, we may be able to suggest an alternative course that you are eligible to apply for.
Please only apply (refer/add a clearing choice) to us on UCAS if you have received a 'Clearing offer' from St George's.
If you do receive an offer to study, we will send you instructions on how to refer yourself to us on UCAS at the appropriate time. Applying via our online Clearing application form, and/or being invited to attend an interview are not considered an offer to study and if you refer yourself on UCAS before being instructed to, you are likely to cause a delay in your application being processed.
If you were unsuccessful in gaining an interview during the main application cycle as you did not meet our academic requirements, and you have achieved higher grades than predicted, you are able to re-apply during Clearing for the same course at St George's.
If you were unsuccessful during the main application cycle following an interview, unfortunately, we are unable to accept another application from you through Clearing for the same course. You would be welcome to apply for the same course next year in the main UCAS cycle if you meet the entry requirements and are still interested in studying at St George’s.
All interviews will be conducted remotely this year - either as a remote multi mini interview (MMI).
Whether you will need to have an interview and the format it will take depends on which course you are applying for.
If there are vacancies on our courses, they will require interviews as follows:
- No interview required: Biomedical Science BSc, Clinical Pharmacology BSc.
- Telephone interview: Healthcare Science BSc, Paramedic Science BSc, Occupational Therapy BSc and MSc.
- Remote MMI: Medicine (MBBS), Physiotherapy BSc and MSc, Diagnostic Radiography BSc, Radiotherapy and Oncology BSc.
If you have confirmed a ‘nominated contact’ with UCAS, we are able to discuss your application with them.
We will not discuss your application in its entirety with any other individual, but are happy to provide general advice and guidance.
Unfortunately, we are unable to consider transfer requests through Clearing. Please see our Student Transfer policy which explains our transfer request process.
If you are currently studying on another course and wish to leave that programme, and study at St George’s instead then this may be possible. If you are withdrawing for reasons other than academic failure, then we would welcome an application from you. However, please be aware that if we make you an offer, our Admissions Team will conduct further checks and may ask for further information about your previous course. Furthermore, it will not be possible to enrol at St George’s if you have not withdrawn from your previous programme of study.
Unfortunately, we will not be considering any extenuating circumstances during Clearing. There are no exceptions to this rule.
If you would like to apply to one of our courses with extenuating circumstances, we would welcome an application from you from Autumn 2023 for 2024 entry when our Admissions Team and tutors will be able to dedicate the time required to fully consider your individual circumstances.
You can read more about this process here.
We will not be running a standalone contextual admissions process during Clearing - we have worked hard to ensure our consideration process is as inclusive as possible, without requiring applicants to provide additional information that would usually be taken into consideration against a contextual admissions scheme.
However, if you are ‘care experienced’ (you are currently or have previously been in care) then please declare this on your application form if you are applying for a course which requires you to complete an interview.
Yes. You will receive information about applying for accommodation in your formal offer email from the Admissions team.
We do our best to ensure that all first-year students are guaranteed a room in our Halls of Residence. However, we are unable to guarantee this for those who gain offers via Clearing. Once you receive a formal offer from us on UCAS, you will be invited to contact the Accommodation Team and explore the housing options that may be available to you.
You will be able to apply for accommodation the day after accepting your offer on UCAS.
We aim to deliver high standards of service to applicants during the Clearing period and are aware that it can be a stressful and difficult time for students.
If you are unhappy with the way your application has been handled, we advise you to wait for an outcome on your application before submitting a complaint, so that the complaints process does not cause a delay to the processing of your application, which may mean the course to which you are applying closes in Clearing before your application is fully considered.
To make a complaint, please email clearingcomplaints@sgul.ac.uk with your full name, UCAS ID and details of the nature of your complaint and a member of the team will aim to respond within 10 working days.
Please note complaints must be made via email to this dedicated email address.
