About the course

This course is for SGUL staff and consists of 6 weekly sessions which build on each other. It is suitable for most people, and investigates skills and practices designed to help with the difficulties of everyday living as well as how to cultivate flourishing.

The practices taught include practising mindfulness in different ways and in different postures, including sitting, walking and moving. Each session includes some time practising and some time talking in the group about our experiences of each practice, and any useful learning that comes out of that. There is no pressure to disclose information about yourself, your past or any other personal information in the group setting. The level of your contribution to these discussions is entirely in your control and may vary from week to week.

Each week of the course you are given ‘home practice’ which starts at about 10 minutes and builds up to 20/25 minutes as the course progresses. Using the audio tracks to guide you, home practice is not difficult, but it can be hard to fit into a busy lifestyle. However, your commitment to home practice (and the important lessons you learn from it) will ensure that you get the best out of the course.

The course can be very rewarding, and also challenging. Some things make it difficult to practise the listening to experience that meditation requires, e.g. feeling very anxious or depressed, a difficult relationship breakup, grieving for a loved one, struggling with major drug and alcohol issues or major financial worries. These may not stop you learning meditation just now, but it is worth considering whether the time is right for you.

If you are unsure whether to take the course at this time, please contact Julia Hutchinson and we can make a time to talk this over. If you know you are going to miss more than one session because of previous arrangements, then it’s probably best to do the course at another time.
