In January 2024, St George’s, University of London received funding from the Office for Students (OfS) to further develop the University’s degree apprenticeship offering. The funding is designed to help institutions expand their provision of existing degree apprenticeships, and the University received an allocation of £67,886.80 from the total OfS funding pool of £40 million to do this.

The allocation has been used to second two members of the apprenticeship team at City, University of London to share their expertise and help grow the Healthcare Science Practitioner (HSP) apprenticeship.

Speaking about this new partnership, Derek Baldwinson, Director of Quality and Partnerships, said:

“I am delighted to share this update with our community. The relationship with City, University of London apprenticeships team has been made possible by the merger and the OfS funding. Through this partnership we can now access knowledge and skills that we currently don’t have inhouse and the learners on our apprenticeship degree will reap the benefits”

Cynthia Simon, the Healthcare Science Course Director, added:

“I am confident the City team will help us to recruit more apprentices and offer them an excellent experience. I’m very much looking forward to working with them in the coming months”

Healthcare Science Practitioner (HSP) apprenticeship

An apprenticeship is a job that offers the apprentice the opportunity to gain experience, receive training and undertake learning in an educational setting. The Healthcare Science Practitioner apprenticeship is modelled on St George’s BSc programme and learners follow a similar programme. Learners on the course are training to work as Clinical Physiologists when they complete their studies. As Clinical Physiologists, they play a vital role in the prevention, diagnosis, therapy, monitoring and rehabilitation of patients with a wide range of medical conditions.

On the programme, learners experience both cardiac and respiratory/sleep physiology before choosing a speciality. Over the three years of the degree apprenticeship, learners spend 50 weeks on placement, learning and focusing on clinical skills. On completion, apprentices are eligible to register with the Academy for Healthcare Science (AHCS).
