Parcel shipment

Shipment of a variety of materials by courier can be organised through the Laboratory Services Team.

While documents and the majority of consumables/plastic do not present a shipping hazard, some items are subject to dangerous goods regulations such as biological material, dry ice, laboratory reagents and equipment containing lithium batteries. Members of the team are certified and trained to ship dangerous goods so It is important to consult with Laboratory Services when shipping this type of material.

International shipments must be shipped on Monday or Tuesday, to avoid customs delays over the weekend. Domestic shipments may be shipped Monday to Thursday.

To arrange a shipment, please complete the Shipment Request Form (Word) and send to labhelp@sgul.ac.uk.

For further information, please refer to the Shipment of Parcels: Policy and Procedure and the Transport of Biological Materials Policy (PDF).

Liquid nitrogen storage facility

The facility comprises of eight self-filling liquid nitrogen freezers which are managed and maintained by Laboratory Services. There are also a number of smaller tanks which are manually filled by members of the Laboratory Services Team. All self-filling freezers are connected to our remote temperature monitoring system to ensure consistency of storage and sample integrity.

The facility is managed by Lara Painter.

Any staff member requiring access to the facility must first undergo an in-person induction and sign the risk assessment.

Storage space within the self-filling freezers is managed by Laboratory Services and can be assigned to groups when required.

Laboratory Services provide small amounts (<2 litres) of liquid nitrogen for snap freezing purposes, this should be requested the day before it is required.

Please send all requests to labhelp@sgul.ac.uk

Cold storage and monitoring service

The Laboratory Services Team manage a cold storage monitoring system which enables researchers to monitor the temperature of fridges, -20⁰C, -40⁰C and -80⁰C freezers and any self-filling liquid nitrogen storage vessels.

How to obtain a temperature monitoring probe

Researchers wishing to obtain a temperature monitoring probe for their cold storage facility should labhelp@sgul.ac.uk indicating their requirement. The Laboratory Services Team will contact the researcher for further information, if necessary, provide a quote for the requested probe and if agreed, arrange for its installation.

All researchers requesting a temperature probe will be required to provide a contact list in the event of cold storage failure. It is the researcher’s responsibility to notify the Laboratory Services Team if their contact number changes or if they need to be temporarily or permanently removed from the contact list e.g. when taking annual leave or when leaving St George’s.

Training and access of temperature logs will be provided.

Itemtracker

ItemTracker is a cutting-edge sample masnagement software designed to streamline and optimize laboratory workflows. This powerful tool enables researchers to effortlessly log and track their research samples, ensuring accurate records and easy retrieval. With customizable data fields and real-time monitoring, ItemTracker empowers researchers to efficiently manage their valuable samples, promoting collaboration and ensuring compliance with the Human Tissue Act (HTA) regulation.

To register and request training, please email labhelp@sgul.ac.uk

Please read Policy for use of Itemtracker (Word) for further information.
