In information governance (IG) there is a five-letter acronym that covers the core concepts on the use of information, HORUS. This states that information must be:

  • held securely and confidentially

  • obtained fairly and efficiently

  • recorded accurately and reliably

  • used effectively and ethically

  • shared appropriately and lawfully.

HORUS therefore supports our research, academic and corporate work, which must be conducted confidentially, ethically and lawfully.

Statutory requirements and standards

Standards play an important role in helping achieve good information governance and the IG policies, procedures and guidance have been written to cover statutory requirements and IG standards such as:

  • Data Protection Act 2018

  • UK General Data Protection Regulations

  • Human Rights Act

  • Common Law Duty of Confidentiality

  • Freedom of Information Act 2000

  • Environmental Information Regulations

  • Public Records Act

  • BS ISO 15849 – Information and Documentation – Records Management

  • BS 10008 Evidential Weight and Legal Admissibility of Electronic Information
