A team of students from St George’s has emerged victorious in the first ever London inter-university anatomy competition.

Featuring teams from all the London medical schools - St George’s, Barts, King’s, UCL and Imperial - the event took place on Saturday 12 March in the Michael Heron Lecture Theatre, with supporters joining in person and on MS Teams. Across several challenging rounds, the teams battled it out to be named the best anatomy team in London.

Each medical school held its own internal competition to decide the three-person team which would represent its respective university.

The St George’s team comprised Diego Abelleyra Lastoria, Konstantinos Devetzis, and Arya Kamyab, who were crowned winners after an intense final round battle against Barts. They each received £100 Amazon gift cards, and new Atlas of Anatomy textbooks. The team also have their names forever engraved on the prestigious London Anatomy Cup trophy, which will take pride of place in the new dissection room when it re-opens. As winners, they have also secured the right to defend the title on home soil, as hosts of next year’s competition.

The event was organised by the St George’s Surgical Society and Henry Gray Anatomy Society, to bring together medical schools across the capital.

Lead designer and organiser, Noor Haddad (4th Year Medical student), said: “We wanted to create a competition which brought together the London medical school community, after several challenging years with limited contact between students.

The competition took eight months of hard work, support from six different sponsors, and involved surgical and anatomy societies from all the London medical schools. The event was a huge achievement for all involved, not just academically, but as an inspirational story: that a simple idea and a great deal of work has produced such an incredible feat. We can’t wait to defend our title in 2023.”
