Dr Bina Ram, PhD

Bina Ram, 40, graduated from her PhD specialising in Epidemiology with a focus on environmental effects on mental health and well-being. She has now moved onto a post-doc position as a Research Associate at Imperial College London.

She says, “Whilst I was working in the Population Health Research Institute as a Project Manager on a study examining whether living in the Olympic village had any impact on residents' levels of physical activity, I was offered the opportunity to do a PhD based on this study to focus on the effects on mental health and well-being. Having previously completed a BSc in Psychology and MSc in Psychological Research Methods, this was a perfect opportunity to move forward with my career in research.”

“I arrived at St. George's in 2012, and my first impression was that it is friendly environment. I found juggling a PhD with work commitments very challenging at times, especially the long hours to deliver on both work and study. But having completed the PhD is a great feeling and wonderful sense of achievement!”

“If I had any advice for someone doing a PhD, it would be to ensure that you have a supportive team who can advise and guide you throughout. I think it's really important to have a strong support network to make sure you are progressing and staying on track with your career goals.”
