Dr Peter Holt is a Senior Lecturer at St George's. He runs a research programme on determining the outcome of patients within the health services, and in particular those undergoing surgical intervention.
He has performed a large body of work which has been widely cited on the outcomes of vascular surgical procedures, which led to the reconfiguration of this specialty nationally.
Alongside this work, he has an interest in maximising the benefit patients gain from surgery. This is addressed through a number of studies determining how we can predict the risk of patients about to undergo surgery, and how we can minimise their long-term risk after surgery.
He has previously performed work on determining patients’ preferences in receiving care, and has current studies underway in this field.
Dr Peter Holt was appointed Senior Lecturer at St George's and Honorary Consultant in Vascular Surgery at St George's Vascular Institute in February 2013. His consultant appointment followed a Fellowship at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, University of Adelaide, Australia.
Dr Holt trained at St Mary's Hospital, Paddington, before moving to Charing Cross Hospital, then St George's, for vascular research and clinical practice. During his specialist training he spent two years performing General Surgery in Sheffield at the Northern General Hospital, before being awarded a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Academic Clinical Lectureship in 2008 for his work on clinical outcomes research and vascular surgery service configuration. This award was superseded by a five-year NIHR Clinician Scientist Award in 2011.
Throughout his career Dr Holt has sat on a number of national committees including the Quality Improvement Framework for Vascular Surgery and the Audit and Research Committee of the Vascular Society of Great Britain and Ireland (VSGBI). Dr Holt was involved in the design of the National Vascular Database. He has been a clinical expert panel member for a number of Strategic Health Authority level clinical review processes, including the Commissioning Support London Cardiovascular Review and Emergency Services Review.
Dr Holt has authored or co-authored over 120 peer reviewed research articles and editorials including in the British Medical Journal, Circulation, Annals of Surgery and Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology and has written or co-authored over 20 book chapters.
