Dr Melvyn Jones

Interim Head of Primary Care Education
I am Head of the GP/ Primary Care Education group.

Dr Melvyn Jones, who is the Head of Primary Care Teaching, and leads the Primary Care Education Team at St George’s. He is a Clinical Associate Professor at UCL and works as a General Practitioner in London & Hertfordshire.

Melvyn Jones joined the Bart's Academic Dept of General Practice (subsequently Bart's and London, Queen Mary University of London) in 1994. He moved to the Royal Free HSM (subsequently UCL Medical School) in 1997 as lecturer, helping to launch the first iBSc in primary care. He was a Visiting Fellow at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, Canada  in 2000. 

He was a partner at a practice in Hertfordshire for 20 years and still works as a GP in Hertfordshire & Haringey, N London. 


He has several roles in the undergraduate educational field, leading the UCL Year 4 MB BS Module 4A (Cardiology, Respiratory & Acute Medicine). His main role is Year 4 UCL lead for community based teaching, with 380 students placed in 3 courses based in general practices. He was involved in the UCL integrated BSc in primary health care for over 15 years, leading it for the first 7 years. He has led on a BEME systematic review on the role of intercalated BScs in medical education, which was published in 2013. In the postgraduate field he was a GP trainer in his practice and is working with the academic GP trainees attached to UCL.

He became Head of Primary Care Teaching at St George's in Oct 2019.


Melvyn Jones has published in the fields of medical education, cardiovascular observational research and health services research. He was the GP on the NICE COPD 2010  guideline and was a member of the NIHR  Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Programme primary care and disease prevention panel. He is a co-director of the London Best Evidence in Medical Education (BEME) international collaboration (BICC).
