Professor Sir Sabaratnam Arulkumaran, head of obstetrics and gynaecology at St George’s, will deliver this year’s Varma Lecture on Thursday 25 October.

The lecture is called 'Can we achieve the UN Millennium Development Goals for Maternal Health - plans for the future?'. It provides an opportunity to honour the major contribution made to the university and hospital by Professor Arulkumaran, who will be retiring from his post at St George's in January 2013.

Professor Arulkumaran – who is president of the International Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, the global body dedicated to improving the quality of life of women and newborns – will be discussing the United Nations Millennium Development Goal of reducing maternal death around the world, otherwise known as ‘MDG 5’.

The lecture is open to the general public and in particular anyone with an interest in obstetrics and gynaecology. Places are available by booking in advance.
