The St George’s, University of London team defeated rivals from King’s College, Cambridge on last night's University Challenge and marched into the competition’s second round.

Following a closely fought intellectual tussle, the St George’s team emerged from the fracas as winners by 175-145. They will now wait to discover who they are up against in the second round.

The team was led by captain Rebecca Smoker, a first-year graduate-entry medical student, who was joined by fellow MBBS4 students Sam Mindel and Alex Suebsaeng, and MBBS5 student Shashank Sivaji. Bruce Liu, another on the MBBS4 course, is the team reserve.

The team members were assembled following a selection quiz run by the Students’ Union, where each hopeful had to demonstrate their knowledge in a range of topics. Following this, the team had to undergo a selection process by University Challenge to determine which of the universities that applied would appear on the show.
