The St George’s, University of London University Challenge team will be back in quarter-final action against New College, Oxford tonight (Monday 18 March).

The match – the second of SGUL’s quarter-final ties – will be aired on BBC2 at 8pm. It follows the team’s 195-105 win against Pembroke College, Cambridge in its first quarter-final match.

To get through to the semi finals, the team needs to win two quarter-final matches. So, if St George’s wins against New College it will go straight through to the semis. If it loses the next contest, it will play a third time and the winner of that match will go through.

New College comes into the St George’s clash on the back of a 165-125 win over King’s College, Cambridge in its first quarter-final bout.

The St George’s team comprises medical students Rebecca Smoker (team captain), Sam Mindel, Alex Suebsaeng and Shashank Sivaji. Bruce Liu, also a medical student, is the team reserve.

Their route to the quarter-final round began with a 175-145 victory over King’s College, Cambridge in the first round back in July 2012. This was followed in the second round with a 230-140 win over the University of Lancaster.

More than 120 universities enter the show every year, with the top 28 appearing on TV, and it remains the UK’s longest-running quiz.
