The St George’s, University of London University Challenge team has made it to the quarter finals of the competition, following a victorious second-round performance.

St George’s beat the University of Lancaster 230-140 and will now wait to find out who they will face in the quarter final.

The team is led by captain Rebecca Smoker, who is joined by fellow medical students Sam Mindel, Alex Suebsaeng and Shashank Sivaji. Bruce Liu, another medical student, is the team reserve.

The battle with Lancaster began tentatively, but after the opening exchanges Lancaster strode into a 90-50 lead. After this early setback, St George’s charged back at their rivals. With particularly strong showings from Sam and Alex, St George’s pulled back the deficit and took the lead, which they kept until the end.

The St George’s team’s route to the quarter final began with a 175-145 victory over King’s College, Cambridge in the first round back in July. The quarter final is expected to be shown in January or February.
