The Pret A Manger and Petit Pret shops are the coffee chain’s third and fourth UK university stores in the UK.

Any unsold food will be donated by the Pret Foundation Trust to Ronald McDonald House on the St George’s Hospital site which provides ‘home away from home’ accommodation for families with children in hospital; somewhere free to stay for as long as they need to.

The larger of the two shops, which features a comfortable seating area for 124 customers, is on the ground floor in the university’s Jenner Wing and welcomes all visitors including students and staff from the university, which is the UK’s only university dedicated to medical and health sciences education, training and research.

Derek Bannister, Director of Estates and Facilities at St George’s, University of London said: “We are delighted to be welcoming Pret to the St George’s campus.

“Staff and visitors will now have more choice and will benefit from these improvements to our estate. Students will also have facilities to support and enhance their experience while at St George’s.”

The smaller Petit Pret, based on the second floor of Hunter Wing seats around 76 customers and provides a similar range of drinks and snacks.

Both shops offer Pret’s menu of sandwiches, baguettes, salads, snacks, hot food and sweet treats. All fresh items will be made daily in the shops’ shared kitchen and the shops’ Baristas will be on hand to serve a range of organic teas, coffees and hot chocolates, alongside freshly made smoothies and frappes.

Francesco Guiso, General Manager of the new shops will lead a team of 30 staff.

He said: “It’s a privilege to have the opportunity to continue my career with Pret at St George’s, University of London.

“The team and I can’t wait to meet and get to know our new customers. We had the chance to meet some during last month’s Freshers’ Fair and look forward to welcoming many more in the coming weeks!”

During the past year, the Pret Foundation Trust has re-distributed more than three million food items to hostels and shelters across the UK.
