Alumni support contributes towards Freshers’ Handbooks

Published: 22 September 2021

We were delighted to welcome our new students to campus this month, and the Students’ Union (SU) has been hard at work to ensure that our newest members of the St George’s community feel supported as we gradually resume on-site activities. The SU team held Freshers Week at the beginning of September to welcome those joining St George’s for their first year of study. They are also on-hand to help connect all students with the university and one another through societies, activities and campaigns throughout the year.

Thanks to the generous support of our alumni, the Development and Alumni Relations team was able to contribute towards Freshers handbooks, which provide useful information about student life at St George’s, as well as signposting ways to seek well-being support.

The SU team provides flexible pastoral, personal and academic support to students both in-person and online through their welfare service. As well as contributing towards Freshers packs, alumni donations have also helped fund the role of Education & Welfare Support Officer, Lon Teija, for a third year running.

Speaking about the value of the Freshers handbooks, SU President Becky Kemp Arnold says

At the SU, we were delighted to have printed copies of our Freshers handbook and Welfare handbook and we want to thank the alumni for their support. Giving all first and second years a copy of the handbooks has helped us successfully get across lots of useful information.

The students liked knowing more about how they can make the most of their time at St George's and how we are here to support them through it. Having physical copies of the handbooks means they can easily refer back to them throughout the year and beyond. We have been pleased to see students reading them and picking up copies from our office and are looking forward to this continuing throughout Freshers Week.

Thank you to all of those who have helped us support even more initiatives across St George’s this year to help all of our students seek the support they need. If you would like to know more about how we support the students following in your footsteps, visit our alumni pages or email us at giving@sgul.ac.uk.
