Photographic workshops: exploring identity

Date: Tuesday 19 November 2019

Time: 17:30 - 19:30

Facilitated by award winning artist, Joy Gregory, with Deborah Padfield and Thushari Welikala, two photography workshops will take place on campus as part of Open Spaces, a new extra-curricular programme at St George’s.

The two sessions will provide a place to discuss the construction of identity, both personal and professional, and to learn more about camera, iphone and ipad techniques. They aim to be a safe and creative space for staff and students to come together.

All students and staff are welcome. Tickets will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Please book your place by emailing openspaces@sgul.ac.uk.

No photographs will be taken directly of participants

Workshop I
Date: Tuesday 19 November
Time: 5.30pm – 7.30pm
Location: Room H5.21

Identity has been central to photography since its inception in the mid-19th century. This has ranged from studio portraiture and Anna Atkins cyanotype recording of plants, through to more questionable ethnographic depictions, popular in the 20th century.

This workshop is an opportunity to become more familiar with the mechanics of photography and lighting, create self-portraits through objects and explore issues of identity in its broadest sense. No experience necessary just bring a mobile/ipad/camera and an object/s significant to your story/identity.

Workshop II
Date: Wednesday 11 December
Time: 5.30pm – 7.30pm
Location: Room H2.5

Following on from the previous workshop we will discuss and experiment with early photographic and cameraless printing techniques. This will also be a chance to produce your own cyanotype prints from photographs made during the first session. No experience necessary just bring a mobile/ipad/camera.
