Graduates celebrating

I come from a family that has never entered higher education. I was the first in my family to continue on to study A Levels and achieve GCSE grades at a high standard. It has been very tough for me to go through the years of higher education with very little educational support or funding; and thus I feel very proud of myself for achieving what I have achieved at A Levels alone.

To further help with my funding throughout these years, I undertook a part time job alongside my GSCE and A Levels and continue to do so. I’ve always had a passion for biology, and my interest in medicine strung through my love of science and physiology. I was always keeping up to date on health-related news and highly enjoyed reading up on the latest breakthroughs in medicine.

I have enjoyed the first two years of medicine. It has really made me very pleased and proud of all the hard work I put in. Most days I still say to myself ‘am I really here? Is this real?’ Intercalation for me was a way to see different sides to the study of medicine. It gave me a chance to see and explore different subjects and fields that I could potentially specialise and be interested in.

I have a part time job that aids my studies. Having worked in retail for over five years alongside my studies, I feel that it has helped me gain confidence and take on the leadership role that I currently have. This is the only financial support I get alongside my student loan.

The Paul Calvert scholarship has helped greatly with my education and my year out of medicine to undergo an intercalated BSc. This scholarship has allowed me to take up fewer hours out of work and has freed the pressures on my shoulders to meet demands of regular university finance. Not only this, it has given me a great sense of achievement. I now have an additional degree that I did not even anticipate achieving, which has provided me great opportunities. I am so grateful for being awarded the Paul Calvert scholarship and I will be forever thankful for being given this massive opportunity, help and support.
