What is #FairSpaceForAll?

The #FairSpaceForAll campaign has been introduced to encourage the fair use of study space within the library, particularly during busy exam periods. This initative enables users to leave their belongings in the library for up to 30 minutes by completing a reusable #FairSpaceForAll bookmark (which can be picked up at various points around the library) and leaving that bookmark on your desk with your belongings. Should users not return within 30 minutes, belongings may be moved by other users or by security or library staff to allow the space to be used by someone else.

 How does it work?

  • You can pick up a #FairSpaceForAll bookmark from the Library Helpdesk and from other locations around the library.
  • When you want a break, write the date and time of leaving the library on the bookmark and place this on your desk, so that is visible to others.
  • If the 30 minutes elapses, or there is no bookmark present, other users are free to move your belongings aside, or security or library staff may move them to a secure area.
  • The bookmarks have been designed for multiple use, so please reuse when you next visit the library.

Why do we have this initiative in place?

  1. To encourage users to take regular breaks without worrying that their belongings will be removed.
  2. To encourage fair use of the library space and discourage users from 'reserving' desks with belongings for long periods of time, especially during busy periods such as exam time.

Is there anything else I need to know?

  • Any belongings left in the library are done so at your own risk; the library take no responsibility.
  • Valuable belongings (e.g. purses, phones, devices, laptops etc.) should be taken with you when you leave the library.
  • If belongings are left without a completed bookmark, they may be moved to one side before the 30 minute time limit as other users and staff will have no way of knowing how long they have been left there.
