What is Office 365?

Microsoft Office 365 enables you to easily communicate and work with others on-line.

Microsoft Office 365 is a suite of applications with a focus on collaboration and productivity. It is completely cloud-based (aside from the desktop Office applications), allowing you to easily access and edit your documents from a range of devices. 

All university staff and students have an Office 365 account when they receive their ID card.  

St George’s, has made Office 365 and Microsoft Office 2019 available free for all staff and students to use on personal devices running Microsoft Windows, Mac, Android and iOS (iPads and iPhones) for all your study and communication needs with one terabyte of storage space. Microsoft Office 2019 can only be downloaded to 5 devices.  Microsoft Office includes Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, OneNote and Publisher and more.

OneDrive for Business

OneDrive for Business is a cloud-based file storage similar to Windows explorer for all students as part of the Office 365 suite, allowing you to save and access your stored files from anywhere.

The benefits of using OneDrive for Business
  • No need to carry your laptop or USB to university.  You can upload or sync any document from your computer to OneDrive. It will then be available from any computer, tablet or phone.

  • You get 1 Terabyte (TB) of storage on OneDrive to store all your documents.

  • Any files created in Office Online are automatically backed up in your OneDrive space.

  • Share and work on documents with other.

  • Easily recover deleted documents or use document versions. 

Accessing OneDrive for Business

OneDrive for Business can be accessed on all devices via the Office 365 web interface as follows:

  • log into Office 365

  • click OneDrive

  • alternatively, users can install the mobile clients on their Android or iOS devices, or the desktop synchronisation clients on their Windows or Mac.

Microsoft Teams

Microsoft Teams facilitates group work so you can hold discussions with group members from anywhere on any device for meetings, brainstorming and collaboration.

  • All of the Microsoft applications integrate together emails conversations, files storage and more.

  • You can add content, exchange feedback and track edits on shared documents.

  • It can be used to help catch up on missed discussions and view discussions between other group members.

Once familiar with its features you can transfer and continue to build on your knowledge.

Microsoft forms allow you to create forms, surveys and quizzes to share with others to fill-in via the internet. Forms has built-in analytics so you can evaluate responses as  they come in and can be easily exported to excel for analysing or future reference.

Planner allows you to schedule and assign tasks to group members and track progress to completion. It also integrates with other Office 365 apps like teams, outlook and SharePoint.

Yammer

Yammer is a St George’s private social network that helps you get connected to other members at St George’s and share information. Only university members can join, so your communications on are secure and visible only to people within our organisation. Yammer gives you the opportunity to join groups or topics relevant to your interests or activities. You can also follow peers and teams and get their updates delivered right to your feed in real time.

Sway

Sway is a digital storytelling canvas with a variety of visual tools. You can add images, audio, video and other content like YouTube and Facebook on a Sway. You can make your Sway public or provide a link only to selected people.

OneNote / Class notebook

As well as creating personal OneNote notebooks office 365 provides an app for creating class notebooks for using with students. When you create a class notebook you get:

  • student notebooks: this is a private notebook that is shared between the teacher and student

  • content library: a notebook for teachers to share materials with students. This is read-only to students

  • collaboration space: a notebook for all students and teachers to share, organise and collaborate.
