Here you’ll find guidance regarding pay, pensions and benefits as a St George’s employee. For more information, read our full Pay, Pensions and Benefits note (PDF).

Pay

Salary is payable monthly in arrears, normally on the 27th day of each month. If the 27th falls on a weekend or public holiday, salary will be paid on the closest working day preceding the 27th.

More information on payment of salary and the salary scales at St George’s, University of London is available on the payroll web pages.

Merit awards

Each year, St George’s will make a decision on running a merit awards round – for example, depending on available budget – and will announce arrangements for the round. This usually takes place in May/June.

Merit awards offer an opportunity for senior management to recognise members of staff who have made an exceptional contribution by recommending them for a non-consolidated one-off payment. To be considered for a merit award, a member of staff must have had a personal review in the previous 12 months which references exceptional performance. If they have staff management responsibilities, personal reviews for their staff must also have been conducted during this period.

Benefits

St George’s offers staff a range of benefits. Open the tabs below to find out more.

Cycle to work

St George’s runs, in conjunction with Cyclescheme, a ‘cycle to work’ scheme, which is a salary sacrifice arrangement. It gives employees the opportunity to acquire a bicycle and safety equipment at a substantial saving on the retail price, while offering the chance to lead a greener, healthier lifestyle. The scheme is available to all full and part‑time employees who have passed their probation period and have a contract of employment for at least 12 months from the date of application.

Go to Cyclescheme for more information and to apply.

Please note that you are responsible for insuring the bicycle and St George’s will bear no liability in the event of loss or theft. To access bike racks on site, please contact Estates and Facilities.

If you are member of the NHS pension scheme pension, contributions are based on your salary after salary sacrifice. This will affect any pension benefits and additional voluntary contributions (AVCs) for those in this scheme. For more information, please contact payroll.
