You may be able to apply to extend your stay to continue your course or study a new course.
In order to extend your Tier 4 (General) visa, you must:
- meet the eligibility requirements of this visa
- be in the UK
Please read the full Tier 4 (General) guidance for further information.
When to apply
You should apply in the last 3 months before your current visa expires.
Using the standard service, it costs £448 to extend your Tier 4 (General) visa. If you choose the Premium Service, it costs £948. You will also have to pay the healthcare surcharge as part of your application. Check how much you'll have to pay before you apply.
How to apply
You will need to fill in the online application form. Once you've completed this form (and before you make payment), you'll be given the option of booking an appointment to apply in person (Premium Service) at a Public Enquiry Office or sending your supporting documents by post (Standard Service). The only difference between the two services, aside from the cost, is the speed at which they make a decision on your application.
For more information, please refer to GOV.UK.
Applying in person
If you apply in person, the date of application is the date that you attend your appointment. This means it’s important that you book your appointment to take place before your visa expires. Payment for the application is made online using a credit/debit card.
At the appointment you will need to take your payment confirmation (printed), your completed application form and your supporting documents. Biometrics are taken at the appointment.
Sending your documents
If you post your supporting documents the date of application is the date that you pay for the application online so it's important that you do this before your visa expires. The payment can be made online using a credit/debit card.
UK Visas and Immigration must receive your supporting documents within 15 days of you making your application. It's recommended that you send your documents by Royal Mail Special Delivery.
Your visa application will not be processed until you have provided the necessary biometric information. You should receive a biometric invitation letter from the Home Office within four weeks of sending the application. This will explain how to provide your fingerprints at participating Post Offices in London. There is an extra charge of £19.20 for this service.
If you applied in person and your application is successful, you will have your passport and documents returned to you on the day. Your new visa, the Biometric Residence Permit, will be sent to you separately within seven to 10 working days of the decision being made.
If you've sent your documents by post, you'll usually receive a decision within eight weeks of making your online application. Once you’ve applied you can stay in the UK until you’ve been given a decision, as long as you applied before your last visa expired.
