Certain subjects studied at postgraduate level require you to have an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) clearance certificate issued by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO).

Three students in St George's library

Both your offer letter and Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies statement will indicate whether you need to apply for an ATAS certificate.

Application process

It can take up to six weeks or longer to obtain an ATAS certificate and you must have obtained your ATAS certificate before you can apply for your Tier 4 visa. You must submit a print out of your ATAS certificate with your visa application otherwise your application will be refused.

Your certificate's validity

Your ATAS certificate will be issued for your course at St George’s and will only remain valid as long as your Tier 4 sponsor and/or course details (including the length of your course), do not change.

Further information

More information about ATAS certificates, including which courses require one and how to apply can be found on the GOV.UK website
