Where and how do I apply?
You can apply for a Tier 4 (General) visa outside the UK from the country in which you are a national or the country in which you have existing formal residency rights. Applications are online and all applicants should read the Home Office's Tier 4 Policy Guidance before applying.
When should I apply?
This must be:
- before you have travelled to the UK;
- no more than three months before the start date of your course; and
- no later than six months after your CAS was issued.
Check the visa processing times in your home country for an indication of how long it will take for your application to be processed. (Note: select 'Points Based System Visas' in answers to 'Visa Category').
How much does it cost to apply?
The Tier 4 (General) application fee is £328. Visas that are more than six months long also include an 'Immigration Health Surcharge.' The cost of this is based on the length of the visa. The surcharge is calculated as £150 per year for each year of your visa. If you have any queries, you can use the Immigration Health Surcharge tool on the Home Office website to check how much you will have to pay.
What biometric data do I have to give?
As part of the Tier 4 (General) application, you are required to provide your biometrics i.e. a facial photograph and fingerprints.
Do I need to have a medical check?
Applicants from some countries are asked to provide a medical certificate confirming that they're clear of Tuberculosis if they are coming to the UK for more than six months.
