Getting around London

Getting around London doesn't need to be a daunting prospect. The Underground can be the most convenient way to get from A to B if you do it right and you don’t have to break the bank.

The London Transport Student Oyster Photocard offers students reductions of 30 per cent. These savings are on top of the savings you can make by purchasing a Travelcard. You can buy a Travelcard for different travel ‘zones’ in London, and you can pay for your travel by the day, week, month or year, or by using your Oyster Card. Within these parameters the Travelcard offers you unlimited travel on the Underground, buses and overground trains. If you make the same journey regularly at around about the same time, it can be an extremely cost-effective way to travel.

Tooting Broadway station is only a short walk from St George’s. The Tube can transport you quickly and easily to the heart of London. You will be able to access all of the Underground lines and connect directly to six mainline stations: Charing Cross, Euston, King’s Cross, St Pancras, London Bridge and Waterloo.

Alternatively, you can always hop on a bus. For shorter journeys they are cheap, quick and convenient and a great way to see the sights of London. Travelling on the bus allows you to visually connect up the different areas of London in a way the tube does not.

For those who like to keep fit or prefer a more environmentally friendly way of travelling, pedal-power may be the answer. There is an ever-increasing number of dedicated cycle tracks and quiet streets away from the main roads, where you can safely, and legally, dodge the traffic. Contact Wandsworth Council for information on cycle routes in and around the Tooting area.

Driving and parking in London is notoriously difficult and increasingly expensive. A limited number of parking spaces are available close to the Halls of Residence at St George’s Grove. Unfortunately they are very quickly snapped up, and there are few, if any, cheap parking alternatives.
