We offer a range of learning support services for students to support their study on our undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
Writing Skills
We are proud to have a Royal Literary Fund’s Writing Fellow to help students develop writing skills. Undergraduate and postgraduate and staff can get help with anything from essays and assignments to journal articles, theses and letters of application.The Royal Literary Fellow can be found in Student Support Services, based on Hunter Wing level two (the room next to Counselling Services), on specific dates during term time. Free, confidential one-to-one sessions of up to 45 minutes are available by appointment. Help is commonly offered on:
- structure and logical flow
- clarity
- style
- general improvement of writing skills
Essential Skills Programme
The Essential Skills Programme offers A-Level catch up teaching in biology, chemistry, physics and numeracy. It is intended for students who may have taken different A-Levels prior to starting at St George’s, particularly graduate entrants.
The Essential Skills Programme runs one afternoon a week during Autumn term. Numbers are limited, so it advisable to book.

Careers Support
The Careers Service is here to support current students, recent graduates and members of staff to develop the skills that they need to find and maintain satisfying careers throughout their working lives.
English Language Support
St George’s provides support for students whose second language is English. Students can make up to two appointments per term to see our English Language Support Tutor to discuss issues such as:
- Academic writing skills
- Grammar for written English
- Following academic lectures
- Taking part in academic discussions with native speakers
- Giving presentations.
The Student Centre can help with booking appointments.
