Clinical and laboratory facilities

One of the reasons so many students choose St George’s is the wealth of clinical experience that the institution offers.

Sharing a site with a busy NHS hospital means there is always a tremendous diversity of clinical study material to work with. Having so many patients on site and a variety of different cases, you can get involved straight away in routine clinical procedures. Students on certain courses can also take advantage of placements at other hospitals in the area to broaden their experience even further.

Fully equipped clinical-skills laboratories on the St George’s site give you plenty of opportunity to practise and perfect your skills. This includes procedures such as taking blood pressure and pulse, checking for vital signs and resuscitation techniques.

Different scenarios can be set up using the latest patient dummies to mirror real-life health problems and symptoms. You are also encouraged to practise these basic skills and techniques on your fellow students.

Three newly refurbished 'wet' laboratories with a capacity of 60-80 students each allow the delivery of a wide range of practical classes in the biological sciences. This complements the information derived from other teaching sessions as well as giving direct experience of experimental and diagnostic techniques.

The substantial level of world-class research on the St George’s site (research income last year £15million) underpins the wide spectrum of research project opportunities available to undergraduates. This includes access to state-of-the-art technology within individual research groups and in central research facilities such as the Medical Biomics Centre.

Our physiotherapy laboratories enable you to gain simulated practical experience in a wide range of skills before undertaking clinical work placements.

You are also able to use general teaching rooms for private study when they are not in use for formal teaching.
