Current projects
The Stroke and Dementia Research Centre's ongoing work includes:
- International Stroke Genetics Consortium (ISGC). ISGC is a global collaboration of researchers. The consortium has been established to further the understanding of the genetic basis of stroke. Members conduct their own research as well as coming together under the ISGC banner with larger, collaborative studies.
- South London Ethnicity and Stroke Study (SLESS). The SLESS has been funded by two Stroke Association programme grants to examine why strokes are approximately twice as common in UK Africans and African-Caribbeans compared with Caucasians.
- The DNA Resource for Lacunar Stroke Study is a case-control DNA database in young and middle aged Caucasian lacunar stroke.
- The St George’s Cognition And Neuroimaging in Stroke (SCANS) study aims to investigate the changes in the brain and the changes to cognitive abilities that occur in cerebral small vessel disease, as well as the relationship between the brain and cognitive abilities.
- The Cervical Artery Dissection in Stroke Study (CADISS) is a randomised multicentre prospective study comparing antiplatelet therapy with anticoagulation for patients with carotid and vertebral artery dissection.
- How intensively should we treat blood pressure in established cerebral small vessel disease? (PRESERVE) A new randomised controlled trial aiming to determine whether a strategy of intensive, versus standard, treatment of blood pressure in hypertensive individuals with cerebral small vessel disease (SVD) and leukoaraiosis is associated with reduced cognitive decline.
